Where to experience Compline

The pandemic brought many changes to church services – especially those involving choral singing – but now things are looking much brighter! This page has not been updated since 2019 – so if your group needs to be added or revised on this list, drop a comment below. Thanks!

Compline outside of monasteries in the U.S. and Canada

• Compline beyond brick walls
  • Divine Infant King Apostolate for Traditional Liturgy (Independent Catholic Christian Church). Vespers and Compline according to the Sarum Use, Tuesdays, 9pm (US Eastern Time). Scroll down to “Conference Call” on the Online Ministries page link for Conference Call information and download of the liturgy.

• Alabama
  • Auburn: St. Dunstan’s Episcopal College Center. Wednesdays, 8pm.
  • Florence: Trinity Church, Canterbury Ministry. Wednesdays at 7pm during the school year.
  • Montgomery: Church of the Ascension, second Sunday of the month at 7:30pm.

• Alaska
  • Anchorage: St. Mark Lutheran Church. Sundays at 7 p.m. (except summer).

• Arizona
  • Phoenix: All Saints Episcopal Church. Every Fourth Sunday at 8pm, September through April.

• Arkansas
  • Jonesboro: St. Mark’s Episcopal Church. Sundays at 6:30pm.
  • Little Rock: Compline Choir, Christ Church (Ep).Sundays, 6:45 p.m. Listen to podcasts , or watch a video.

• British Columbia (CANADA)
  • Vancouver: Christ Church Cathedral (Anglican Church of Canada). Sundays, Feb-Nov, 8pm. A Compline CD is available.
  • Victoria: Candlelit Compline at St. Barnabas Church. 8pm on the third Sunday of every month except July and August. St Barnabas Church, Victoria BC, Belmont and Begbie streets. Visiting experienced choristers are invited to participate in the 6pm rehearsal.

• California
  • Berkeley: Saint Joseph of Arimathea Anglican Theological College. Check to see if their singing of the offices is open to the public.
  • Los Angeles: St. James’ in the City (Ep). Fourth Sunday of February, April, and October at 7:30pm.
  • Los Angeles: St. John’s Cathedral (Ep) in downtown Los Angeles. Compline is at 9pm on the first and third Sundays of the month.
  • Nevada City: Compline Choir, Trinity Church (Ep), 7pm on the first Sunday of the month throughout the year. Three groups alternate in singing Compline: the Trinity Compline Choir (SATB), Renaissance Man (male), and Voces Angelorum, which may be the only women-only choir outside monasteries chanting Compline today.
  • Oakland: St. Paul’s Episcopal Church. Every fourth Sunday of the month at 8pm.
  • Palm Desert: St. Margaret’s Episcopal Church. Compline by the Schola Cantorum, 1st and 3rd Sundays at 7pm, October through May.
  • Palo Alto: Stanford University, Stanford Memorial Church. Compline sung by guest choirs Sundays, 9-9:30pm during the academic year.
  • Redlands: Chapel Singers, University of Redlands. Perhaps the earliest service to be modeled after Seattle, about 1962, it’s now sung occasionally – check university calendar for performances. Watch video.
  • Sacramento: St. Paul’s Episcopal Church. Fridays at 6pm.
  • San Francisco: The Episcopal Church of St John the Evangelist. Third Sunday of the month at 8:30pm. Sung by the group Endersnight. Some nice highlights of their Compline services on their Listen page.

• Colorado
  • Boulder: St. John’s Episcopal Church. Compline is sung at 9pm; check the schedule to see which Sunday of the month to hear it.
  • Colorado Springs: Grace and St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church. Compline is sung on the last Sunday of the month at 8pm, September through April (except December).

• Connecticut
  • Greenwich: Compline Choir, Christ Church (Ep). Compline is sung on Sundays at 5pm.
  • Hartford: Trinity Episcopal Church. Compline is sung on the Sundays of Advent at 8pm.
  • New Haven: Compline Choir, Christ Church (Ep). Sundays during the university term with candles, incense, and fine polyphony, 9pm.
  • Norwalk: St. Paul’s On-the-Green (Ep). Every Sunday at 9pm.

• Delaware
  • Wilmington: The Presbyterian Church of the Covenant will hold a Lenten Compline Service on Sunday, April 7, 2019, at 7pm. The Schola Cantorum of Covenant Church (professional and community musicians) sings music by Gibbons, Victoria, and others.

• District of Columbia
  • Washington, DC: Labyrinth Walks at Washington National Cathedral includes Compline at 8:15 pm in the Great Choir; monthly on selected Tuesdays; see schedule.

• Florida
  • Tallahassee: St. John’s Episcopal Church. Sundays at 8pm during the academic year.

• Georgia
  • Atlanta: Schola Cantorum, St. Bartholomew’s Church (Ep). Begun in 1986, the Schola sings on the 2nd and 4th Sundays at 8pm, Sept – May. See video.
  • Blairsville: St. Clare’s Episcopal Church. An all-male ensemble sings the Office of Compline at 7pm on the first Sunday of the month. You can contact them on their Facebook page or by email at Compline@StClaresEpiscopal.org.
  • Savannah: Compline Choir, Christ Church Anglican: Sundays, 9:00 p.m. See video.

• Hawaii
  • Honolulu: Lutheran Church of Honolulu: First and third Sundays of the month, 7:30 p.m. Compline was sung here from 1976-2014, and has started again in 2016. See a recent article, “‘Old’ Compline is Back,”” as well as an article from 2012 in this blog.

• Illinois
  • Chicago: St. John Cantius Parish. The daily office is sung, in Latin, by the Canons Regular of St. John Cantius; see the schedule for the Divine Office.
  • Lake Forest: The Church of the Holy Spirit (Ep). Compline is offered every Sunday at 7 p.m. during Epiphany.

• Indiana
  • Indianapolis: Episcopal Church of All Saints. Every second Thursday at 9pm.

• Kentucky
  • Louisville: Christ Church Cathedral (Ep). “Cinema and Compline,” 3rd Fridays at 7pm.

• Manitoba (CANADA)
  • Winnipeg: St. Margaret’s Anglican Church, Tuesdays at 9:15pm.
  • Winnipeg: University of Manitoba, St. John’s College. Occasional offerings of Compline by the group All the King’s Men.

• Maryland
  • Baltimore: The Maryland State Boychoir. See schedule for Compline sung throughout the summer months.
  • Davidsonville: All Hallows Chapel, Sundays at 6pm in the winter months.

• Massachusetts
  • Boston: Harvard University Choir, Appleton Chapel. First Thursday of the month at 9pm during Fall and Spring terms.
  • Boston: Trinity Church Boston. Every Sunday (during academic year) at 8pm. Watch a video about the service.
  • Cambridge: The Outdoor Church. Compline on Thursdays at 6:30pm. See Wikipedia article.
  • Newton: First Unitarian Society in Newton. Vespers, on the second Sunday of each month, are designed for diversity of spirit and thoughtful meditation. This is a unique monthly service of music led by the Vermilion Quartet and poetry read by FUSN’s poets. A reincarnation of Schola Nocturna (See video.)

• Michigan
  • Lansing: Church of the Resurrection (RC). A schola sings Night Prayer in Latin (pre-Vatican II) on the first Sunday of the month at 8pm.
  • Parnell: St. Patrick’s Catholic Church. See video.

• Minnesota
  • Minneapolis/St. Paul: The Minnesota Compline Choir , founded in 1992, sings Compline from the Lutheran liturgy on the third Sunday of the month at 6:51pm at Pilgrim Lutheran Church, 1935 Saint Clare Ave., St. Paul, MN. Podcasts are available as well as a video.
  • New Ulm: Martin Luther College. Compline is offered every Monday at 10pm. The service is streamed live (see link).
  • St. Paul: The parish of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church on-the-hill has closed, but a video of their Compline and Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament is still available.
  • St. Paul: St. John the Evangelist (EP). Every Thursday from September through June, at 7pm. Local groups Lumina (all female) and Mirandola (STTB) alternate.

• Mississippi
  • Collins: St. Elizabeth’s Church (Ep), 2nd and 4th Wednesdays at 6:30pm.

• Missouri
  • Springfield: St. John’s Episcopal Church, 3rd Sunday of the month at 8pm.
  • St. Louis: Trinity Episcopal Church, 3rd Sunday of the month at 7pm.

• Montana
  • Bozeman: St. James Episcopal Church. A new group (TTBB) is being organized (September, 2014) to sing Compline.
  • Kalispell: Christ Church Episcopal. The Kalispell Compline Choir presents “Nightcap for the Soul” every second Sunday of the month, September through May at 9pm.
  • Troy: Holy Trinity Episcopal Church. Tuesday and Saturday at 7pm (outside, weather permitting).

• New Hampshire
  • Portsmouth: St. John’s Episcopal Church. Sundays during Lent, 7pm.

• New Jersey
  • Bordentown: Christ Church (Ep). Compline is sung by the group Vox Fidelis.

• New York
  • Albany: Cathedral of All Saints (Ep). Compline is offered by the choir of men and boys at 9pm on the first Friday of the month.
  • Auburn: St. Mary’s Church (RC). The Schola Gregoriana of St. Mary’s Church (RC), Auburn, NY, sing Compline by candlelight every Sunday night in Advent and Lent, at 8 p.m. On the Rose Sundays, the 3rd Sunday of Advent and the 4th Sunday of Lent, an organ recital precedes Compline at 7:30 p.m.
  • Brooklyn: St. Paul’s Carroll St. (Anglo-Catholic Episcopal). 9pm on the first Sunday of the month.
  • New York City: Catholic Underground. See their Facebook page for more information.
  • New York City: A mixed choir called Sarum sang the Mediaeval English Sarum rite of Compline for many years up until about 2010, at St. Paul’s Chapel on the campus of Columbia University. Their website is still currently available.
  • New York City: St. Michael’s Church (Ep). Sung Compline at 8:30pm on Wednesdays, September through Mid-May.
  • New York City: Trinity Church, Wall Street (Ep). Sunday evenings at 8pm.
  • Rochester: Schola Cantorum, Christ Church (Ep). Sundays at 9pm, October through April. Candlelight Concerts precede Compline at 8:30 on First Sundays, with reception following.

• North Carolina
  • Burlington: Episcopal Church of the Holy Comforter. Compline sung occasionally on Sunday evenings.
  • Chapel Hill: Chapel of the Cross (Ep). Compline is sung in the nave, Sunday nights during university term at 9:30. Incense, candle light, Gregorian chant and renaissance polyphonic music. Service is followed by organ improvisation and refreshments in the cloister or parish hall.
  • Chapel Hill: Church of the Holy Family (Ep). Sings Compline during most Sundays of Advent and Lent at 8pm.

• Nova Scotia (CANADA)
  • Halifax: St. Mary’s Cathedral Basilica, 1531 Grafton Street. Compline is sung every Sunday at 6:15 PM by the Holy Heart Schola Cantorum. Regular parishioners and visitors to the cathedral are invited to listen and to join in (copies of the music are provided). The Schola is Halifax’s all-men’s choir specializing in Gregorian Chant, sung a cappella, in Latin. The choir does not have a website, but it does have a Facebook page (under the name Halifax’s Holy Heart Schola Cantorum).
  • Halifax: University of King’s College Chapel. 9:30pm Mondays (Women’s choir) and Tuesdays (Men’s choir). Sung during the academic term, and some Mondays during the summer.

• Ohio
  • Columbus: St. Joseph Cathedral (RC). First Sunday of the month at 9pm.

• Oklahoma
  • Norman: St. Thomas More Parish (RC). Chant Schola offers Compline during the summer, and other times during the year.

• Pennsylvania
  • Philadelphia: St. Peter’s Episcopal Church celebrates Compline several times a year at 7pm on Sundays. Click on the link to see the complete schedule and hear a recording of the St. Peter’s Compline Choir.
  • Pittsburgh: The Pittsburgh Compline Choir (founded 1988). A Lutheran Compline, Sundays at 8pm, September – April (academic year), in Heinz Memorial Chapel, University of Pittsburgh. See Facebook page here, or see a YouTube video here.

• South Carolina
  • Charleston: The Cathedral Church of St Luke and St Paul. Sunday nights once a month at 8pm.
  • Columbia: Trinity Episcopal Cathedral. Since 2004, Compline is sung at 8pm on most Thursdays of Advent and Lent.

• Tennessee
  • Nashville: St. George’s Episcopal Church. Every third Wednesday at 9:15pm, September through May.
  • Nashville: Catholic Night Prayer at Vanderbilt University. Video of students who get together for Night Prayer, 10 p.m. Sundays, Sep – April.

• Texas
  • Austin: Compline Choir, St. David’s Episcopal Church. Begun in 1985, sings every Sunday evening at 8pm. Music listings and recordings are here.
  • Houston: Compline Choir, St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church First Sunday of the month at 8pm (founded 1991).
  • Houston: Trinity Episcopal Church Concert and Choral Compline by the Trinity Choir, second Sunday of the month from September through June, at 7:30 pm.
  • Longview: Trinity Episcopal Church, 2nd Sunday of the month at 8:30pm.

• Virginia
  • Arlington: St. Mary’s Episcopal Church. Every Third Sunday of the month at 8 p.m. (September through May, none during summer), led by a women’s or men’s schola.
  • Fredericksburg: St. George’s Episcopal Church. Every Sunday at 8pm, September through May.
  • Richmond: St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church. Offered since 2010 every Sunday evening at 8pm – chant and Renaissance polyphony. Recorded music available on site.

• Washington
  • Bainbridge Island: St. Barnabas Episcopal Church. Men’s schola sings Compline on the first Sunday of the month at 8pm.
  • Lakewood: Compline Choir, St. Mary’s Episcopal Church. A male choir observes the Office at 9 p.m. on the second Sunday of each month.
  • Olympia: Compline Choir, St. John’s Episcopal Church. Sundays, 8 p.m.
  • Seattle: The Compline Choir at St. Mark’s Cathedral (Ep), every Sunday at 9:30pm. Founded in 1956, it has been broadcast live at Classical KING-FM 98.1 since 1962. See links to podcasts on both the Compline Choir site and KING-FM site via the “Programs” menu.
  • Seattle: Vicars of Christ Church Compline Choir, Wednesdays at 8:30pm at Christ Episcopal Church, in the University District.

• West Virginia
  • Morgantown: Schola Cantorum, Lutheran Campus Ministry, WV Univ. Roman Catholic Compline according to the 1960 Breviary. There’s a nice article about them at the Cantica Nova site.

• Wisconsin
  • Madison: Luther Memorial Church. Compline on the 2nd and 4th Sundays at 9pm.

• Wyoming
  • Lander: Wyoming Catholic College. Night Prayer is sung in the chapel daily.
